Abstract

|
Twenty total hip arthroplasties were evaluated in fourteen patients who had ankylosing spondylitis. After an average period of follow-up of 4.5 years, complete pain relief was achieved in all 20 hips. Significant gains were made in
total
range of motion of the hip joint(postoperative total range of motion 195°). the hip prosthesis seems to be durable in this young patients(average age, thirty-three years) even if the follow-up periods were short and the cases studied
were
not enough. The incidence of clinically important heterotropic ossification(Classes III and IV of brooker et al.) was not high.
