Abstract
Twenty total hip arthroplasties were evaluated in fourteen patients who had ankylosing spondylitis. After an average period of follow-up of 4.5 years, complete pain relief was achieved in all 20 hips. Significant gains were made in
total
range of motion of the hip joint(postoperative total range of motion 195¡Æ). the hip prosthesis seems to be durable in this young patients(average age, thirty-three years) even if the follow-up periods were short and the cases studied
were
not enough. The incidence of clinically important heterotropic ossification(Classes III and IV of brooker et al.) was not high.
